Happy New Year

Hi there.

As I type it is now late evening here in NZ and as such you will no doubt all be either tucked up in bed awaiting the first hangover of the year or the hardcore ones may be finishing off the final hogmanay Whiskey.

We are now in Turangi which is a small town slap back in the middle of the North Island and which claims to be the trout fishing Capital of the world....I have just contributed to this reputation by sending my own giant brown trout out in to the Local water system (sorry Mum.) We did finally manage to get a car albeit our lack of foresight means we had to pay a wee bit more than if we booked it online a few weeks ago.Its not a huge deal as we are to drop it of in Rotorua on the 4th.

Wellington was superb. The city itself has quite a cosmopolitan and European feel and as with nearly all New Zealand, the scenery is fanatstic. We saw in NY with a typically Celtic session on the beers which ended up with us seeing in the bells in a cracking wee Irish bar on the Citys Cuba Street.

It is fair to say that Hogamany is not nearly as big a deal over here as it is back home and there was little build up to Midnight itself...however shortly after the bells the party really kicked off and there was plenty of handshaking, kissing and hugging of the locals to celebrate the start of 2009 not to mention having to preform numerous versions of Auld Lang Syne. Unfortunately we were not able to spend any longer in Wellington as we are heading up north to Turangua (not to be confused with Turangi) before heading onto the party on the 3rd with Mark and Majella. Am particularly looking forward to this as there is a 7s tournament taking place on the day of the party which we are going to.

Thats all for now other than once again to wish you all a very Happy New Year and an extremely prosperous 2009

Ignore that last one..put it dopwn to drunken access to the internet!!

So this is us leaving the south island today, ferry to Wellington and who knows what else..we're having a bugger of a time trying to book a car for the north island so not sure if we're going to make it to Richard's 30th with Mark and Majella in some place north of Rotorua or if we have to hang around Wellington til one comes available..I was too busy enjoying the beers in the sun last night to listen too closely to what our final plan is ..oooops!!!

You should have seen the nick of the caravan we slept in last night, there was no accomodation anywhere near Nelson yesterday so we finally got this lady to give us a cabin and a caravan..thinking Doug and I have never slept in a caravan I quickly jumped in and told MnM that they could have the cabin...OH MY GOD WHAT A MISTAKE..I dont think Ive ever seen as bad a caravan..and Ive stayed in many in my youth!! Luckily to say a goods night sleep was organised by enjoying many a beer and lots of wine!!

so see ya later to the south island and cant wait for the north..xx

Last of the South Island Chat Id say..

Hi there!! Hope ye're all well, we had a fab christmas day but I must admit it didnt really feel like christmas at all..In my brain ye're all at home enjoying a fairly crappy summer at the mo and we're just lounging about in the sun cos its that time of year!!! On the Road Again

Howdy.

Hope you all had a magic Xmas back home and that Santa was good to you all.

Christmas day was fabulous over here.

The 4 of us started the big day with a BBQ and Bucks fizz (the drink - not the 80s pop group ) on the patio of our Apartment before heading into Queenstown for a fabulous meal late at night. I think we were all happily sozzled by the end of the evening.

Boxing Day was also spent in Queenstown with another trip up the gondola and a go on the luge..I am pleased to say that I managed to extract some revenge on Aoifa, winning 3 out of the 4 races before crashing specatacularly in the final race of the day and taking half the skin of my left leg in the process...Ouch. That will teach me for getting cocky.

I have to say that so far Queenstown has been the high point of my trip...it really does have something for everyone and is located in the most spectacular setting with crystal clear lakes or imposing Mountain ranges wherever you look.

On Saturday we were back on the road and haeded North taking in Wanaka where we stopped to have a stroll down the lake and to pay a visit to "the Amazing World" theme park where Aoif and I managed to get totally lost in the maze. We spent a quiet Saturday night in Haast before rising early and continuing up North to Greymouth where we are staying in a beautiful motor park overlooking the beach. As I type it is now half 8 and the sun is still out in force.

On the way tio Greymouth we stiopped at Franz Joseph and Fox Galciers to take in the amazing glaciers which dominate the 2 towns.

Anyway another Barbie and cold beer are calling me..Ta Ta for now.

Happy Christmas Encore

In my defence the Luge is very close to the ground and unfortunately my body mass is not conducive to going at high speeds on the flatter sections of the track...thats my excuse and Im sticking to it, and anyway I won the last race which was the only one that really counted.

As Aoifa says having a fabulous time and it seems that everywhere you go in this area you're treated to another unbelievable view and there is so much to do catering to all tastes.

We'll probably just spend the rest of the day chilling out ahead of the big day, take care and everyone have a fabulous christmas.

Happy christmas From Queenstown

Hello from fabulously sunny queenstown, the sun has finally arrived and we are enjoying every minute of this fabulous place. We arrived here last fri and have been busy bees getting all our list stuff done, the trip to Milford Sound was absolutly amazing..again the scenery was out of this world, almost becoming immune to its fabulousness!! We went up the gondola aswell which I think I may have damaged eardrums with my screeching like a banshee with the fear..think I kept it up for pretty much all of the journey up, lucky for Doug!! Think he's just getting the feeling back into his hand from my squeezing it...

Again the views up there were amazing, highlight for me though was overtaking Doug not once, but three times out of the five Luge rides we did, looooser!!!!!

And today was the shotover jet, absolutely terrifying high speed jet boat racing down a very tight canyon, the nice driver boy almost chopped my head of the rocks on numerous occasions and tipped me out with the fast 360 degree turns, again I found a new pitch to my screaming which I think the whole boat enjoyed this time!!

Mark and Majella arrived last night and its just fab to have them here, we've got our shrimps ready for the barbie tomorrow and no doubt will enjoy a sociable beverage or two over the day consoling ourselves with the sunshine instead of the usual rain and snow..

Happy christmas to ye all..hope ye have a fab christmas and we'll see ye all in the New Year - on the 14th Feb for the homecoming party..xxx

He's been typing for about an hour!! Bless him and his two pointer fingers!!!

Totally true when people hear Im from Munster..I even got a kiss on the cheek from one guy, they have so much respect for the Munster team, they reckon they're the only team that ever comes close to beating the All Blacks on our hemisphere side..as you can imagine I didnt disagree and milked it for everything it was worth!!

Dougs doing fab with the driving..there's many a steep hill that Ive got my foot through the floor with my imaginery brake and my teeth are ground to zero almost with the fear!!

Penguins and Seals were fabulous, and sparkling wine is v cheap over here so am off to enjoy some seeing as we've been abstaining in anticipation of Mark and Madge coming over..Have managed to upload pics at last, all of them so I can clear out my card and start again, sorry they're all in the one album havent time to reorganise just now..

http://picasaweb.google.com/aoifa.smith think this should work...
Howdy there.

Tuesday today and we are now in Balclutha (which apparently translates as Little Clyde).
All the streets are named after places near Glasgow and the west of Scotland although I am pleased to say that there the similarity ends. It seems quite a pleasant and peaceful wee town and I have yet to see any drunks strolling down the street carrying a bottle of Bucky and a Kebab (though Aoifa is planning on having a few tonight so that could yet change).

I have to say once again how friendly everyone is over here. Aoifa is especially welcome when the locals hear that she is a Munster girl and people do not hesitate to come up and chat to you or invite you to join them for a drink.

On Monday - after 3 days of sightseeing, chilling out and fantastic hospitality from our hosts in Akaroa we headed due south through some fairly unforgettable wee Towns including Asburton and Timaru (think glenrothes without the bowling alley).

We stopped in a spot called Oamaru which again, is not the bonniest but is famous for its' penguin sanctuary so at night we travelled to a spot where you can watch a colony of penguins swim back to the shore and waddle home to their nests, stopping briefly oputside the nest to feed their young. That was afantastic experience if bloody freezing.

Today we set off early and continued south travelling along the gorgeous coastal road and through some gorgeous wee spots including Moearki (which is famous for Fish Restaurant which apparently some boy called Rick Stein -no relation to Jock I am told - rates as one of the best in the world and a set of ancient, Boulders with strange patterns on them which have formed on the beach) and then a spot called Shag Point (yes we got the obligatory photo with the sign in the background) where we strolled on to the beach and found ourselves less than 10 feet away from a colony of grey seals.

After that we headed on to Dunedin. It is strange visting a place where all the major streets are named after streets or places in Edinburgh. It seems that most Kiwis in the Otago region have some sort of Scottish ancestry and many of them can tell you their clan names and the part of Sotland that heir family originate from. One has yet to buy nme a beer yet though (maybe they do have Scottish roots after all). There is not a great deal to do in Dunedin but we dida bit of shopping, visited Burns' statue and had a look roungd Carisbrook Stadium which is surprisingly small.

Thats all for now.

Take care

Doug and Aoifa

Helloooo from NZ...this place is proper fabulous!! We had 3 nights in christchurch in the wierdest hotel room I have ever seen, the bathroom was a circular cubicle thing stuck in the corner, lucky we're married now as privacy was definitley not high on the agenda when they were designing those hotel rooms!! We survived though and managed a few good nights out in christchurch, a fab city, so laid back and relaxed, was just what we needed.

We got down tot he business of car hiring, which the first 20mins of driving around were a bit of an experience (to say the least). My wondrous husband decided he'd be lazy and hire an auotmatic - which he hasnt driven in 50 million years and it showed!! Am just happy we got out of the city alive, and that wasnt just cos I was wanting to commit a bit of murder myself!! Happily after 20 mins of driving in the main streets on cchurch douglas figured out the balance of pressure required on the break so that we didnt coming to a screaming halt every 5 secs!!

We're in Akaroa now and oh my god the scenery is fantabulous, mountains rolling onto a gorgeous lake with the greeniest of blue waters..its just amazing!! The weather's not been the best although typically the sun has come out as we're stuck in an internet cafe!! Our accomodation also has provided us with extra company of a night time..a purring puddy cat sleeps at the end of our bed to make sure we're ok!! Hope alls well ye're side..xx

So Long Sydney

Well guys thats our 3 fabulous days in Sydney at an end.

We arrived on Monay lunchtime and spent the day and night chilling out and familiarising ourselves with some of Darling Harbours nitespots. Tuesday we did the open bus tour round all the tourist spots (Opera House, Harbour Bridge, the Rocks etc) unfortunately Aoif would not let me jump out at Kings Cross..ooh well. Also paid a visit to David Campese's sports shop but sadly the great man was not there to serve us. I was hoping to compare world cup winning stories.

Tuesday night saw us emabark on a Sydney Harbour Dinner Cruise... the 3 course meal, open bar and dancing girls all added to the experience but the main event was the fantastic views of the city skyline as dusk and then nightfall set in and while this was a bit tamer than the Perth Wine cruiser it was doubtless a top night.

Wednesday.... after a long lie we made our way to Bondi Beach..generally the weather here has been pretty poor but we lucked out big time on Wednesday as it was scorchio all day. Bondi itself was cracking and the waves crashing against the beach were an awesome sight to behold...

I also have to share with you one of the best chat up lines I have ever heard...sunbathing just beside us were two young, attractive swedish girls, (before you start to point fingers can I just say that Aoifa chose the spot) both of whom were sunbathing topless. This obviously drew the attention of two young Aussie scamps who strolled over and engaged them in some dreadful bajnter...seeing that their patter was getting them nowhere they moved in for the kill.

"Jees you sheilas are burning up...I've got some tanning oil in my bag, I'd be Happy to rub it on for you."

On having this offer politely declined the boy turned round and said

"Don't worry..I won't charge you" You gotta luv a trier.

Just had enough time on Thyursday for a tour of Sydney Aquarium before heading back to the airport...next stop NZ, speak soon.

Oh my god, Bondi Beach was AMAZING..loved it loved it loved it, the waves were huge!!!!

Sunday, December 7, 2008

well..we have been busy!! Sorry not had time to internet cafe til now..Am trying to remember where we've been!! Perth was def my favourite of the 3 aussie cities we've done, thats us in sydney now, just booked our sydney harbour dinner cruise for tonight, am very excited!! Free booze and I noticed they've got sparkly wine on the list so I might just be the drunken oaf of a wife this evening!! Melbourne was a cool wee place but our plans of a day on the beach was scuppered with torrential rain so we had to head to the bar..again!!! The Neighbours tour was all booked up so we consoled ourselves with a trip to their jail for a Ned Kelly exhibition and then on to the their 360degrees tower thing where we saw amazing views of the city..I left my usb card reader at home (cleverly) so not had a chance to upload any pics yet, will maybe get one at the airport weds hopefully!

So am off to get ready for our cruise, weather's not been great the last few days but the tan from Bali is still holding up, will have to concentrate on that when we get to NZ..loads of xmas decorations up over here, looks funny in the partial sunshine..

Doug here.

In my defence can I just say that the booze was free.

I would have disgraced my Country had I not ended up absolutely smashed.

The wine tour was mgic...a gift from Maragret and Mike Beckwith and as we cruised down the river visiting various wineries I did think that Margaret and Mike would have loved the day (especially the selection of fine ports...lets just hope the gout stays away).

Melbourne next and I think I'll give my body few needed days off the grog. Speak soon

Doug
well..perth has been great fun so far!! We met up with Fi allen and she's picking us up tonight and taking us for a drive down the coast then off to some restaraunt for a sunset dinner and lots of drink aftr that..pretty much what Perth hs been all about in a nut shell, drink!!

We had a HORRIFIC journey getting here though, have decided I really dont like Vietnamese people..sorry if any are reading this..but in fairness, I cant describe how rude and horrendously irritating the lady who was sitting beside us on the plane was, when I asked her (bearing in mind we had just suffered a 2 hour flight from Bali, transfer desks and all manner of crap to get to this plane, and the fact it was about 1 in the morning) could we get into our seats she just looked at me and shook her head and said No!!!!!!! No she said, yes you read it right, No!! Well I can tell you I didnt like that response very much, was just about to deck her when the air hostess came up and actually picked her up off her seat, then her and her 50 other travelling companions started shifting around they're seats for 20 minutes, while we were moving down the runway I might add, ohhh grrr, it gets me all iritated again when I think of them, Ill have to move on before I break the computer or something!!

Then we arrived at the hostel at 9.30ish to be told we couldnt check in until after 3, that was a tough morning of walking around trying to find things to do, so we gave up and went to the park for a kip!!! We're classy we are!! Thats when the downward spiral began for Douglas Williamson..he's not managed sober since..culminating in a wine tour yesterday in which he outdid all other pathetic attempts at getting drunk in his lifetime, we were ofered wee tasters of stuff at lots of different times, Doug forgot where the taster line was and went for full on VATs of drink instead, coupled with a cruise downriver in 35degrees unrelenting sun and no intake of water left me with a very very drunken husband and in bed by 8 o'clock..its funny what this marriage thing does to you, where as before Id have screamed and shouted at him for a day now Im just sitting back with the smug satisfaction that some day soon am going to exact my smug revenge, by getting worse, much worse!!
